This past weekend I was at Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary helping out with their annual open house. Cedar Row is one of my favourite places on earth! This weekend I met so many great people at the farm, many of whom were on their first visit out to the farm. I also met a beautiful hen named Rita who is a recent arrival at Cedar Row.
Rita is an incredibly friendly bird who seemed to enjoy being held and snuggled. At one point she fell asleep in my arms. As I was stroking her soft little head I just marveled at her gentleness.
I wish that everyone could have the opportunity to meet animals like Rita. Having the opportunity to connect with chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, turkeys, etc. is such an important part of developing a sense of compassion for all species. I spoke with so many people this weekend who were making important connections between the animals they were meeting at Cedar Row and the decisions they make in other aspects of their lives (e.g.: consuming animal products). It was incredibly powerful to watch these connections being made. Rita and the other animals at sanctuaries are important ambassador animals, and I like to do everything I can to support the work of places like Cedar Row. This is why I was absolutely thrilled when Colleen Knight and Laurie Morrison gave me a very special birthday gift–they set up a fundraiser to help raise money for Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary in honour of my 40th birthday. I am so touched and honoured by this lovely gesture!
