Twitter

I signed up for a Twitter account ages ago, but still haven’t been able to figure out what the hype is all about. I enjoy blogging and facebooking and other online applications, but Twitter just seems a little dull to me. I want to like it — if only because the cute little bird on the logo is, well, just so. darn. cute.

Given how popular Twitter is I figure I must be missing something. I understand the basics of it, I think, but I just don’t find it all that interesting. Maybe there are ways to use it that I haven’t thought of yet — anyone care to share?

  1. I use it as the water-cooler for the self-employed. But since you work at home a lot, you might find it useful that way, too. I follow friends from other online places (blogs and such) and a few folks that just tweet interesting things.

And talk about the stuff I might talk about casually in the hallway with colleagues if I worked in a place where that was possible. So, the weather, what’s for lunch, interesting stuff I’ve read recently, crazy things my cat is doing.

Some folks use it to promote online businesses and I throw a bit of that stuff in there, too, though it doesn’t dominate. And the journos seem to all be on there but I can’t quite work out why.

It took me awhile to figure out what kinds of things I wanted to use it for and thus who was interesting to follow. Also, someone suggested TweetDeck to me and I use that to organize the folks into columns.

HTH. Though I’m pretty sure you can lead a full life without Twitter :-)

  2. I use it a little, but to be honest I’m not sure why. A few friends use it who I don’t hear from often otherwise, and I follow a few sources of reliably interesting references to online material, but that’s about it. And really, Facebook would give me access to those friends, and Google Reader would give me the references, so maybe I use Twitter simply because it’s one technology rather than two….

  3. I haven’t signed up for Twitter (it kind of seems a bit weird) but I know several people who have. My sister has over a thousand followers and counting. That part I just don’t get–following someone you don’t know. Guess I’m a stick in the mud. I actually had someone send me an invitation because they wanted to follow me on twitter.
